A Mangalorean Christmas

December 28, 2006

Celebrated Christmas 2006 with family in Mangalore – in true Mangalorean style – midnight mass, lots and lots of food, wine, music and boisterous family gatherings. The weather in Mangalore was awesome – pleasant, not too hot or humid.

What did I eat on Christmas day?

Kusvar (Konkani word for Christmas sweets and savories) – which includes everything from rose cookies, kal kals, neuvrios (fried snack with coconut stuffing), rice marbles, fruit cakes (my favourite is the banana cake), thukdis.

Food – prawn pulao, beef chilli, sannas (of course), pork curry, chicken curry and cucumber salad.

Drink – Sula wine (the shiraz) and Goan port wine (delicious).

A lovely X’mas indeed!

On a Plum Cake Trail!

December 22, 2006

What’s Christmas without plum cakes? If you are wondering where to buy your plum cake this X’mas, here is a peek at the products from some bakeries in Bangalore.

All Saints Bakery

The plum cakes in this old-world bakery are very fruity and likely to appeal to folks who like their plum cake on the sweeter side. The cakes have a gentle rum flavour and are mild to taste.

Location: 126/2, Brigade Road, Bangalore, ph:25572091.

Fatima’s Bakery

Lots of tutti-frutti and slightly on the drier side, no rum flavour to speak of, I was not too impressed with Fatima’s plum cake.

Location: 1/2 Hosur Road, Bangalore, ph: 25510378.

Very rich and extremely moist with rum soaked, aged raisins, Koshy’s plum cakes taste like they have been baked the old-fashioned way. The cakes are not too sweet and the strong rum flavouring packs quite a punch. Delicious! Kids, however, may find the taste too strong.

Koshy’s Bakery- 1, Wellington Street, Richmond Town, Bangalore, ph:22211516.

Tiny store near the restaurant – 39, St.Marks Road, Bangalore, ph:22213793 (ph no. of the restaurant)

Daily Bread

For the non-traditional version, try the plum cakes at Daily Bread. You can have the rum plum cake which is well, rummy, soft and crumbles in your mouth. The rich plum cake with extra fruits is very, very nutty (with plenty of almonds) and moist with a mild caramel flavour. The rum content is less than the Koshy’s plum cake but nevertheless this cake is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Location: Daily Bread, 43, 4th B Cross, 5th Block, Koramangala Industrial Area, Koramangala, Bangalore-95, ph: 2563-1302/1304.

Branches in Church Street, Indiranagar, Bangalore Central, Forum Mall (inside Fabmall), Koramangala (inside Big Bazaar), Banshankari (inside Big Bazaar) and Ulsoor.

Sweet Chariot

Distinctly different from the other bakeries, the Sweet Chariot plum cakes are sweet, with a strong rum taste, aged raisins, spices and a mild marzipan flavour. Very rich!

Location: 15/2, Residency Road, Bangalore, ph:41120556.

Various branches in Bangalore.

On the drier side, with raisins, cashews mixed fruits and vegetables (it has chopped and glazed apples, carrots, mangoes and dates) and a mild rum flavour.

Location: Nilgiris Building, 171, Brigade Road, Bangalore, ph: 25588401

Nilgiris Supermarket locations: Airport Road, Frazer Town, Jayanagar, R.T. Nagar, Jalahalli, Malleshwaram, Kammanahalli, Bannerghatta Road.

My rankings for the plum cakes:

  1. Koshys
  2. Daily Bread & Sweet Chariot
  3. All Saints
  4. Nilgiris
  5. Fatimas

So go on, indulge in some plum cake and wine and have a Merry Christmas!
